Trust & Safety at Weavers

Our approach in short

Weavers connects people across generations for real, in-person visits. That means safety has to come from real practices, not just policy language. Here's what we currently do and what we are building.

Background checks and identity verification

Silvers and Weavers age 18 and older all complete a background check before being matched with anyone. This includes criminal history and sex-offender registry across all 50 states.

Alongside the background check, we also verify identity to confirm, directly or through VolunteerBadge, that the person registering is who they say they are, such as by checking a government-issued photo ID. If a Weavers chapter coordinator or community partner personally knows the person registering, based on an established relationship and history with them, their attestation can stand in for a document check. The background check is required either way.

VolunteerBadge's background check isn't a one-time gate. It includes ongoing monitoring for new disqualifying records for as long as someone remains an active participant.

A background check and identity verification are both required before a match is made. Neither is a guarantee of a person's character or future conduct. They're a key layer of a broader safety approach, not a substitute for your own judgment during visits.

Orientation before your first visit

Before a Weaver and Silver are matched and take their first visit, we ask both of them (and, for a Weaver under 18, their parent or guardian) to complete a program orientation. The orientation is delivered in person or via video and includes visit expectations, how to keep everyone safe, how to report a concern, and time commitment.

How we review visits

After each visit, Weavers and Silvers are asked a short set of questions about what happened, by text or voice. That content, and any related notes from Weavers staff, may be reviewed by our team for safety and quality, and is processed with help from an AI tool to support building each Weaver's transcript, as described in our Privacy Policy.

We also review visit data itself — like how long a visit lasted and whether check-in and check-out happened as scheduled — alongside debrief content. This helps us catch patterns that debrief text alone might miss, such as a visit that ran much longer than planned, and also feeds into how we evaluate the Program more broadly.

Staying in touch, safely

Today, once a Weaver and Silver are matched, we may share their phone numbers and/or email addresses with each other directly (or with a parent/guardian, for a Weaver under 18) so they can coordinate visit times and logistics.

We don't yet have in-app messaging that would let people communicate without exchanging personal contact information directly, but we plan to build visit coordination into the app so matched participants can communicate without needing to share a personal phone number or email address. We'll update this page when that function is live.

When we build a dedicated mobile app, we also plan to eventually add an in-app one-tap help button to reach someone quickly if something feels off during a visit but isn't a 911-level emergency.

Location and check-in

We currently require Weavers to check-in and check-out on the webapp. We do not track movement during the visit. In the future, we may build in GPS tracking for automatic check-in and check-out and location verification.

Reporting a concern

If something happens during a visit, or anywhere in your experience with Weavers, that worries you, please tell us. You can reach us at safety@beaweaver.com, a dedicated address for safety concerns, background-check questions, and privacy rights, separate from our general contact address. We take reports seriously and may suspend or remove a participant while we look into a concern.

Where required by law, or where we believe someone may be in danger, we may report information to law enforcement or other appropriate authorities, including in situations involving suspected abuse or exploitation of a minor or vulnerable adult.

What Weavers is not

Weavers is a community connection program, not a medical, mental-health, or emergency service. Silvers and Weavers are program participants, not licensed professionals, and nothing in a Weavers visit is medical, psychological, legal, or financial advice.

If you or someone else may be in danger, or is experiencing a medical or mental-health emergency, call 911 or your local emergency number, or contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, right away.

Future Changes

We'll update this page as our safety practices change. For example, we may add features like in-app messaging, an in-visit help button, or visit-location confirmation. If you ever notice something on this page that doesn't match your experience, we want to know: safety@beaweaver.com.
